Heat Protectant Sprays that will Shield Hair – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

Heat Protectant Sprays that will Shield Hair – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

Admit it: We all lowkey love hot tools. Curling irons, straighteners, and blow dryers can totally transform our hair from a frizzy mess to bouncy and shiny. Whether we want to add life and volume or create sleek shine, hot tools are sometimes the only way we can get our stubborn hair textures to oblige. But it’s no secret that subjecting our strands to high heat on the regular can wreak havoc on their vibrancy and health, leading to dull, brittle hair and even split ends. One way to save your strands from sizzling under the scorching heat? A heat protectant spray.

HairsprayKeepAnyStyleInPlace-FeaturedImage - Best Heat Protectants For Hair - Features CHI 44 IronGuard Spray - This thermal protectant spray works from the inside-out preventing damage.
By coating the hair with ingredients like silicones and nourishing amino acids, heat protectants work to seal the hair cuticle and protect it from losing moisture and elasticity due to contact with high heat. And as any good hairstylist will tell you, they’re a must to apply before cranking up the degrees on your straightener or curling iron.

“It is imperative that everyone use a product on their hair simply to protect from the natural elements and excess heat,” says celebrity hairstylist Clariss Rubenstein. “Every hair type needs a barrier between itself and solutions and other things that can penetrate the hair and possibly cause damage. And the right heat protectant can feel like it’s not even there.”

CHI 44 Iron Guard

CHI’s weightless heat protectant formula is clearly made by the makers of hot tools. This spray does not play when it comes to protection. It contains hydrolyzed silk that works with your hair’s natural structure to build strength and resilience while improving moisture and shine. Use it on wet or dry hair before styling for heat protection from the inside out.

Some things just go together. Peanut butter and jelly. Wine and cheese. Your hair and heat-protecting spray. That last one may sound random in comparison to the others, but it’s true. Whether you heat style your hair every day, every other day, once a month, or once a year, you should always be applying some sort of serum or spray that’ll protect it from potential damage that styling tools — many of which can reach up to 450 degrees — can cause. It’s kind of like how you wouldn’t (or you at least shouldn’t) leave your house without putting on sunscreen.

How to Care for Your Relaxed Hair at Home – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

How to Care for Your Relaxed Hair at Home – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

Relaxing your own roots is notoriously difficult to get right and can be damaging to the hair. But you do have options.

Much of the conversation surrounding black hair in recent years has been about caring for and styling natural hair, and for good reason. As news spread that relaxers may cause hormone disruptions and other health issues, black women, in droves, began to cut off their relaxed hair and wear their natural texture.

Yet many black women still do chemically straighten their hair. And right now, they’re locked out of their main source of maintenance: the salon.

As relaxed hair grows out, the new roots can create styling challenges, like edges that won’t lie smooth. Then, over time, breakage can occur at the fragile line between the old straight hair and the new textured roots.

Here, we explore some at-home options with three hair-care experts.

Instead of relaxing, you could just let your roots grow and treat them with a lot of moisture, Ms. Stephen said. Moisture keeps the hair more supple and helps prevent breakage. Deep condition more frequently. If you were on a twice-a-month schedule, step it up to weekly.

“Apply leave-in conditioner daily and focus on that line of demarcation,” Ms. Stephen said. As you moisturize more, manipulate your hair less.

“The more combing you do, the more breakage you’ll have,” she said. “This a good time to focus on caring for your hair and doing protective styling.”

You can over-moisturize, she said, but it’s not a big deal. “The biggest risk is it gets too soft, but all you have to do then is stop adding so much moisture,” she said. “It’s reversible, but breakage isn’t.”

For medium to long hair, straightening your roots with a flat iron is a good styling alternative to relaxing, said Tinika Sadiku of Hair by Sadiku in Manhattan. Her advice: Work with small, thin sections of hair and do so slowly.

Tool kit: One-half-inch flat iron and heat protectant spray.

  • Blow-dry your hair.

  • Part your hair into four sections and start flat-ironing in one of the back sections. Pin away the other three so they’re out of the way.

  • Spray a heat protectant spray, like CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray.

If you’ve watched your hairstylist touch up your roots for years, you may have a false sense of confidence in your ability to mimic the process at home. The most difficult aspect of relaxing your own hair is not being able to see the back and crown, said Joie Wallace, a hairstylist and colorist in Virginia.

Easiest Product To Use – CHI 44 Iron Guard

CHI is easily one of the most reputable brands in the hair styling world, and there are plenty of reasons why. They consistently put out amazing products that aren’t too expensive and last a good amount of time.

The CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protecting System is a unique product which works to build the strength of the strands as well as make it resistant to heat damage from everyday styling. Through the use of proteins and thermal protecting ceramic compounds, it works to notably decrease hair damage, as well as prevent it.

Our Experience – We’d like to say first off, that this product is a bit controversial. Some people really love it, and some people don’t. We do like it, but it wasn’t our absolute favorite.

That being said, it does distribute well and you can apply it very quickly so as to not waste time in the morning getting ready. We also noticed an increase in the shine and softness, just after the first use.

The reason why many didn’t like this product, is because it made their hair feel stiff or crunchy. This is typically due to applying too much product, but if you follow instructions, this won’t happen.

Something else that was a bit of a downside, was the smell. It doesn’t smell bad, but it is very strong, particularly considering the fact that this is just a heat protectant spray. It is definitely not your normal scent for a product like this.

Best Heat Protectant 2020 – The Ultimate Buying Guide Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

Let’s face it; most of us style our hair in some way every morning in order to feel confident about how it looks. This could mean straightening it, curling it, or even blow-drying it. However, whatever kind of heat application you’re using on your hair, it’s important to use a heat protection product.

To avoid or at least lessen the weakening effects of heat on your hair, you need to use one of the best heat protectants out there.

How to Craft the Perfect Hair Routine Based on Your Hair Type – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

If your hair care routine hasn’t changed since high school — or it’s limited to lather, rinse, repeat — it may be time to pay more attention to your mane. Whether you sport a low-key ponytail most days or live for blowouts, your hair deserves a little TLC.

Not every product will work for every hair type, so read on to find out what it will take to keep your unique locks in tip-top shape.

Step 1: Determine your hair type

Don’t overcomplicate typecasting your hair, says Megan Viton, a hair stylist in Boulder, Colorado. You can tell at a glance whether your hair is curly or straight. “Then ask yourself, ‘is my hair big and frizzy or flat and lacking fullness?’”

From there, you can get an idea of your hair type. You’ll see these letters and numbers on hair products sometimes, to help you figure out whether something would be too heavy or not moisturizing enough for you, for example.

Step 2: Determine your hair needs

Once you know your hair type, decide what it needs and what your “mane motivation” might be. Here’s a quick rundown of some common hair concerns and needs:

Damage: Too much heat or coloring, friction (from yanking hair into tight ponytails or buns) and environmental exposure (sun, wind, salt, or chlorine in water) can damage hair, leaving it feeling dry and kinda gross.

Definition: Well-defined hair moves and hangs the way you want it to. When hair isn’t defined, it might look “heavy” or overgrown. With curls, lack of definition turns them into one big clump.

Frizz: When your hair is dry or lacks moisture (due to humidity, genetics or damage), it may be prone to “going rogue.” Frizzy hair stands up, sticks out, and resists being tamed.

Shine: Hair that’s coarse, frizzy, or damaged may appear dull, and products that are too heavy can leave behind a residue, too. Shiny hair is clean, moisturized, and healthy. The outer layer of hair lays flat, so it can reflect light.

Volume: While you can’t control the thickness of your hair, you can control volume to some extent. Volume refers to your hair’s apparent fullness, which you can boost with certain haircuts, styling techniques, and even products.

Create your routine

OK, so now that you know your hair type and your goals, it’s time to nail down your perfect daily hair care routine. Keep in mind that a hair care routine for dry hair is not going to look the same as a hair care routine for curly hair. Sometimes you might mix and match what’s suggested here.

Washing

Viton says for most people, washing once or twice a week is best. But, if you work out daily or sweat a lot and are prone to scalp breakouts, it’s fine to lather up more often. Just choose a gentle shampoo — and never skip the leave-in conditioner.

“Leave-in conditioners are the best for every hair type,” says Viton. “If you want to cut back on breakage and moisturize your hair as much as possible.”

Drying and Styling

Just like you give your skin a break from makeup now and then, do the same with your hair, says Viton, especially if “you’re a heat styling, blonde-obsessed person like myself.” Do a deep conditioner once a week. She suggests taking a couple of days “off” a week — and “loosen up the rubber bands in those ponytails!” Or, try: phone-cord hair bands like Kitsch Spiral Hair Ties

And no matter your hair type, use a heat protectant. “A spray or a cream to coat your hair is what protects your hair from heat,” says Viton. “That is a must for us styling junkies.”

Best Heat Protectants Under $30 – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

If any type of hot tool makes an appearance in your beauty routine, you’ll want to find the best heat protectant for hair to go along with it. Whether your styler of choice is a blow-dryer, straightener, thermal brush, or curling iron, your hair will definitely thank you if you prep it beforehand with a protective covering.

While most formulas start off with the same basic purpose (shielding your style from heat up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit), they differ in bonus effects. That’s where our favorite data source comes in: online shopping reviews that reveal which bottles do more than the rest. Common complaints are: mists that dispense unevenly, serums that weigh down your final style, formulas that smell like something’s burning, or sprays that leave behind a crunchy residue. We’re tossing all those out in favor of the options that impart lightweight shine and smoothness, while also cutting down on dry time and sealing split ends.

CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray

Key selling points: This cult classic gets rave reviews for its ability to preserve color vibrancy and help prevent split ends.

What customers say: “This is the BEST heat protector I have used, which has been a lot. I am the girl who often dyes her hair and has gone through three colors in two years. I need all the protection I can get, and THIS gives it. I do not use irons or blow-dryers daily anymore; however, this ensures my hair is soft when I do and still has some life to it. And it doesn’t make my hair stiff (which others did).” —Sherri Lee, Amazon

How to Curl Your Hair With a Straightener – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

How to Curl Your Hair With a Straightener – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

I am going to let you in on a little secret. You know how all those girls on IG with perfect beach waves? They’re using hair straighteners to get them. I’m not even kidding—a flat iron (!!!) is how they get those bomb-ass waves and curls. But if you don’t know your way around a flat iron, it can be kind of hard to figure out how TF to maneuver your flat iron through your hair without messing it up.

Don’t stress too much about it though—there are only seven easy steps that you need to figure out to get the Insta-worthy hair of your dreams. You’re welcome.

STEP 1: SPRITZ YOUR HAIR WITH A HEAT PROTECTANT

Safety first, people. Make sure you mist on a heat-protectant spray to prevent your hair from getting fried or damaged.

STEP 2: ON THE RIGHT SIDE, START CURLING THE HAIR CLOSEST TO THE NAPE OF YOUR NECK

Part a 1-inch section of hair closest to the nape of your neck, and feed the section in between the two clamps of the flat iron. Then, in one fluid motion (or else you’ll create a bunch of not-cute crimps in your hair), twist your wrist away from your face, so the hair flows over (not under) the iron.

To create the curl, you need to make sure the hair continues to wrap around the flat iron’s barrel as you push the iron toward your ends. It’s basically, like, the same technique you’d curl a ribbon with a scissor. Oh, and also a quick reminder: The smaller the section, the curlier your hair will be. So if you want to switch it up and go for some super tight curls, part a section that’s less than 1 inch.

STEP 3: WORK YOUR WAY UP TOWARD YOUR HAIRLINE

Keep working your way up toward your hairline with the flat iron. Don’t forget to feed the hair into the flat iron a little higher than mid-length—this makes sure your curl starts closer to the top of your head and not just at the ends.

STEP 4: GRAB THE SECTION OF HAIR AT THE HAIRLINE

Finish the right side off by grabbing the section of hair at the hairline, clamp the hair around the mid-length, then turn the iron away from your face. This hair is low-key really easy to curl, since hair near the hairline isn’t as thick as the rest of your hair.

STEP 5: ON THE LEFT SIDE, START AT YOUR NAPE AGAIN

Repeat the second step, but this time on the left side of your head.

If you’re right-handed, as you curl the middle section of your hair, your right arm will be reaching over your head and your fingers should be pointing toward the floor. This placement is normal (even though it might feels mad weird) and it’ll help control the iron better. As you move toward the ends, though, twisting your wrist away from your face, you’ll find that your arm needs to cross in front of your face to reach the tips.

STEP 6: FINISH OFF WITH THE HAIR AT YOUR HAIRLINE

Repeat step 4 and finish off the hair at your hairline on your left side. (Again, you’ll reach your right arm over your head and then bring it in front of your face to control the iron.) Be sure to run your fingers through the curls to break them up a bit—or you can even use a boar bristle brush for a more uniform finish if you don’t like the separated spiral look.

STEP 7: SPRITZ YOUR HAIR WITH A HAIRSPRAY

And that’s it! You’ve successfully curled your hair with a straightener. Before you snap a pic, spritz your hair with a hairspray to make sure your curls hold.

Best Hairstyling Products for Men – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

You don’t have to go to barber school to get the hairstyle you want every day.

Last week my wife came home from work with a large, cardboard portfolio. She said she had stopped at my mom’s house on the way home; my mom had said, “I’m going through some old things, and I thought you’d like copies of all of Mike’s old school pictures.”

Ugh. The fact is, no man should have to spend thirty minutes every morning just on his hair. At the same time, maybe spend more than two? We’re going to talk about the three main stages of your morning hair routine: pre-styling, styling, and finish.

Heat Protectant

As much as I love my blow dryer, it’s not doing my hair health any favors. Whichever pre-styler product you use, you want to spray on a heat protectant before you blow dry.

CHI Iron Guard Thermal Protection

This affordable heat protectant spray is made by CHI, the same company that makes blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners, which all use high heat. This protectant coats your hair with healthy vitamins and proteins that moisturize and protect so you can style without fear.

How to Fix Dry Hair for Good – Even During Winter – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

Forget about my flaky skin—my biggest winter beauty gripe is how dry and brittle my hair gets. Like, seriously, the very second cold-weather season hits, my regular ol’ products decide they don’t work anymore and I have to change my entire routine. So after spending one too many seasons on the struggle bus, I’ve decided 2019 is the year I learn how to fix my dry hair for good. Ahead, I rounded up the very best tips, hacks, and product recs for getting shiny, soft-as-f*cking-silk hair through winter and beyond.

How to Fix Dry Hair Tip #5: Cut Down on Heat Styling

Repeat after me: Heat styling is harsh on even the healthiest of strands, which means it’s extra problematic for drier textures. If you can, try to limit your use of heat tools as much as possible. If blow-drying and flat ironing is a part of your everyday routine, though, you should at the very least be prepping your hair with a solid heat-protectant spray to prevent damage.
