Best Heat Protectant for Curling – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

Best Heat Protectant for Curling – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

Spending more time than you want to watching your hair break off at the ends? If you’re like most of us girls, you’re probably using some heavy duty heat tools to curl, wave, or straighten your hair into daily submission.

Using your curling iron may make your hair look amazing from afar, but if you’re not using a heat protectant spray to prevent heat damage, you can probably see your split, broken ends up close. Let’s take a look at the best heat protectant spray for curling and get you on your way to a style that looks great in the elevator and in the parking lot.

Before we continue on with the products, let’s answer some more burning questions you may have about heat protectant sprays before you make the decision to invest in one. Hopefully this next section clears the air about whether they are really necessary, and why your hairdresser is always on your case about your hair styling habits.

Do heat protectants really work?

Heat protectants do really save your hair from heat damage caused by your curling iron and other heat tools.  These products create a barrier or a shield against high temperatures, coating each hair strand and protecting your hair all the way to the cuticle from splitting, breaking, and frizzing out.

Not only do heat protectants stand between your curling iron and your hair shaft, most are formulated to moisturize your hair from the inside out, making it strong, shiny, and soft.  As they seal your hair cuticle they also trap in natural moisture, protecting the natural assets you have growing right out of your scalp.

Do you need heat protectant to curl hair?

Heck yes you do! No matter your hair type, you’re putting serious heat to your strands to create those perfect curls.  Using a quality heat protectant will squash split ends, prevent lackluster locks, and ensure you aren’t straight up killing your healthy, happy hair with any of your heat styling tools.

Even your blow dryer can cause serious damage and your curling iron may get up to 450 degrees! Coating your hair in a product that seals your hair shaft and locks in moisture is the best way to ensure the healthiest style possible with your curling iron.

Do you put heat protectant on wet or dry hair?

For best results, you should always use your specific product according to package instructions. Most heat protectants can be used on damp or fully dried hair, but some formulas may give you different results.

How long does heat protectant last?

Most styling products are good for at least 2-3 years after you purchase them. If you’re a girl who is blessed with naturally awesome hair (lucky bum!) or you just don’t heat style very often, don’t worry-your product probably won’t spoil sitting on your shelf.

If you’ve hunted down an all natural heat protectant spray with no types of chemicals or preservatives, you may want to check the manufacturer’s instructions for storage.

Don’t forget.. some heat protectant sprays have more than one use! If you’re not a regular curl and go girl, check out the products that can be used for speeding up your blow dry time or leave in conditioners! More bang for your buck!

How much heat protection spray should I use?

How much product you use really depends on your own hair and style preferences.  If you’ve got a lightweight formula and strong thick locks, make sure to spray it on in sections and comb through your hair thoroughly.

If you’ve got fine or thin hair, less is more, even with the weightless products. You know the struggle is real, and more product means less volume!

Look for reviews from ladies with your hair type and see what’s working for them. Start with a little bit of product and work up to the amount that is just right for you hair.  Adding too much right off the bat might give you that crunchy, 1980’s something look that nobody is going for today.

CHI’s Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray helps prevent heat damage by sealing your hair’s cuticle and keeping heat damage at bay. Use this product by spraying it in to sections of dry hair and working it in before using your curling iron to create your daily style.

This heat protectant spray is formulated to not cause dirty, grimy build up in your hair, and will help hold your curls all day as well.  It’s good for all hair types including natural hair, and does a great job of helping to protect hair that is already heat or chemical damaged. It has a fresh scent that isn’t overwhelming or overpowering.

CHI’s Iron Guard Thermal Spray is lightweight, so it won’t weigh down your style if you’ve got thin or fine hair. Your hair may feel a little sticky when you’ve first sprayed this product in, but after brushing it through or curling your hair should feel soft and smooth.

How To Straighten Hair Without Damaging Curls – Features CHI Flat Iron

How To Straighten Hair Without Damaging Curls – Features CHI Flat Iron

Every once in a while, those of us who normally rock our curls want to show off a new look (because let’s face it: shrinkage is very real). However, straightening natural hair has always been a touchy subject since putting any sort of heat on it is usually a major no-no. In fact, it’s a big reason why many people have made the transition to go natural (so they can prevent heat damage and keep their strands healthy).

It also sparked a longstanding debate about whether straight hair is inherently “better.” Politics aside, we say you’re allowed to showcase your gorgeous kinky curls and rock straight styles, because there’s no shame in switching it up (at the end of the day, it’s your hair). Whatever look you choose, just make sure you’re tracking the health of your hair and understanding what works best to avoid damage in the long run.

What are the best methods to straighten natural hair?

Before picking an option and applying heat, make sure you prep your hair. Start by washing your hair thoroughly with shampoo and conditioner to make the straightening process easier. (Tip: Use a deep conditioner or treatment if you’re prone to dryness. Moisture is key to a smoother finish.)

Once your hair is clean, apply a nickel-size amount of heat protectant (we like the CHI 44 Iron Guard) through the damp strands. Whether you prefer serums, sprays or creams, it’s important not to skip this step as it prepares your hair for the heat and prevents future damage or frizz. It also keeps your hair shiny and soft (and who doesn’t want that?).

Now that your hair is ready, you can decide which option works best for you.

1. Flatiron

When purchasing a flatiron, look for one with customizable settings. You want to keep your iron at the lowest setting required to straighten your hair (most irons go up to 450 degrees, but reaching for at least 360 degrees is beneficial). Flatirons like the CHI Tourmaline Ceramic Hairstyling Iron have a wide range of settings and make it easier to be in control.

While your iron is heating up, start sectioning off your hair and put on your hair protectant product. With each section, start close to the root as you can and gently glide the hair tool down the mid-lengths and ends. (Option to use a fine-toothed comb with the iron to get a sleeker look.) We recommend going over each section once or twice more. Not sure if your iron is too hot? If you hear sizzling or smell something burning, you probably want to dial the heat down a bit before resuming. After you’ve straightened every section, finish the look with a hydrating serum or a humidity-resistant gel like CHI Aloe Vera Humidity Resistance Leave-in Conditioner to keep the flyaways at bay and prevent frizz from forming.

It’s important to note that if your hair is already pretty damaged to start, the flatiron might not be the best choice.

2. Blow-Dryer

Using a blow-dryer to straighten your hair will give you a more voluminous look. Similar to the flatiron, you’ll want to pick a blow-dryer that lets you control the heat settings. The CHI Lite Carbon Fiber Dryer has customizable settings and come with a nozzle attachment made for achieving a straighter style. Prep your hair with heat protectant, section it off and turn your dryer on a cool-to-medium setting.

The easiest way to blow-dry your hair straight is to use a round bristle brush or a Denman brush to avoid tangles. Hold the dryer two to three inches from your head and glide the brush (and the heat) down from root to tip. You want to brush your hair up at the crown (for added volume) and down for the rest of your hair (for optimal smoothness and shine).

3. Rollers

The best way to use rollers is to apply them to wet hair. When it comes to finding the right rollers, it’s all about the texture of your hair and the look you’re going for. The thicker your hair, the bigger the roller should be (a bigger roller means a looser curl). There are a ton of options like Conair Xtreme Big Curls Hairsetter (it heats the rollers for you), Conair Magnetic Rollers (a great preparation for straightening with the help of pins) and Drybar High Tops Self-Grip Rollers (which use Velcro instead of pins and are perfect for women with shorter hair).

Prep with a heat protectant, section off your hair, roll them up and secure them in place with pins if needed. Once you finish rolling your hair, you can let it air-dry or use a hood bonnet on low/medium heat for 30 minutes to an hour (depending on your hair texture and length). If your hair is on the thicker side, you might want to consider using a hood bonnet for the best results. Whichever technique you prefer, remember to wait until your hair is completely dry before removing the rollers.

The best part about rollers is that you can use a flatiron or blow-dryer to straighten your hair even more afterwards. If not, you can leave your hair curled or brush it through to maintain volume.

The Best Heat Protectant – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

The Best Heat Protectant – Features CHI 44 Iron Guard

Want to save your tresses from unwanted distress?

We’ve got four words for you―use a heat protectant.

Most women can’t live without their trusty heat styling tools. That’s because we need them to blow dry our hair, straighten them out and occasionally curl them. Without their assistance, our versatile hairstyles will be unachievable.

Yet, we all know that constantly exposing our hair to high temperatures can cause problems.

So should we break away from our hairstyling habit?

Not necessarily! Rather we advise you to keep a heat protectant at hand. This nifty hair product is the best protection against your constant heat styling. Not only does it minimize the hair damage but it also adds shine back to your dull hair.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? There’s a slight issue though! As an African American woman, you rarely find a hair protectant that does its job. That’s because your hair is thicker, frizzier, vulnerable and often curlier than other women.

So they naturally require extra protection from the heat.

If this sounds familiar, then you’re in for a treat. That’s because we’ve discovered not one or two but five fantastic hair protectants to save your hair.

CHI 44 Iron GuardAre you ready to guard your hair from all kinds of heat damage?

CHI 44 Iron Guard is designed to provide the ultimate thermal protection. It protects your hair from high temperatures and doesn’t let it get frizzy. The overall effect is manageable and a put together look.

The great part is that it also leaves your hair feeling soft and shiny. That’s because the ingredients inside are said to nourish your hair. It boosts hair growth and prevents further damage from heat styling tools too.

Plus, the weightless formula makes it convenient for everyday use.

The only problem is that it takes its sweet time to dry. This makes it an unsuitable product for you if you’re in a hurry.

CHI 44 Iron Guard

Superior thermal protection spray that works from the inside-out, helping to protect hair from thermal damage and breakage with a weightless formula with no added build up. Helps to seal the cuticle and works to prevent future damage.

Key Benefits:

  • Vitamins and proteins add essential moisture
  • Protects against thermal damage
  • Suitable for all hair types
The New CHI Lite Dryer Review

The New CHI Lite Dryer Review

I’m going to be honest. I didn’t even really think I was in the market for a hair dryer. I had one tucked away under my bathroom sink for when I blow dry my hair which was becoming less and less often. I pulled it out to put it back in use and realized why I had forgotten about this one… it was super noisy and the handle was pretty disgusting. The plastic was old and felt sticky for some reason. It worked, but wasn’t enjoyable and really was time for a replacement.

It was then that the Chi Lite Carbon Fiber Dryer entered my life and I never looked back. I feel like I never paid attention to any special details on a dryer because this one felt so nice to use!  Not only did it look super nice with the carbon fiber case, but the cord was super long which helps for two reasons. My vanity does not have an outlet, so I need the longer length. It also helps when you are blow drying someone else’s hair and need that extra length.

The Chi Lite is true to its name in that it does indeed feel pretty light at less than one pound. I think any of us that have long hair know how heavy a dryer can feel after blow drying longer lengths. I probably complained that my arm was going to fall off each time!

I was really excited to try this dryer because I saw it had some added attachments that I thought would work great for when I dry both my hair and my daughters. I’d never used them before and hoped they made things simpler. Sadly, for me. It did not. Haha! Front is back and left is right when blow drying in front of a mirror and I was too mixed up all the time to try and figure them out. It did look like the 360 rotating nozzle would help me but I think I just need to play with it more to get the hang of it. If I ever do, I’ll have to update this post.

I like that it has both hot and cold air options because I usually HAVE to use the cool option after finishing my hair. It gets hot in my bedroom and feels good to give a quick cool blast at the end of things. It also has a high and low setting but I usually keep it at High Heat to straighten and style my hair.

I was most surprised with how much more quiet this blow dryer is than my older ones. My daughter hates noisy things. If something is too loud she covers her ears and wants to go anywhere else. Luckily with this dryer she can tolerate the sound well and I can blow dryer her beautiful and healthy toddler hair on occasion.

I’d say the noise level is the best feature of this powerful dryer for me. I like a hair dryer that works quickly, isn’t heavy, and now leans more on the quiet side which allows me to use it on my daughter too.

The box does mention that it has ion technology that helps keep hair shiny. I’m not sure about all that business as I’ve never really read into it, but my hair is in fact smooth and shiny after blow drying which I think is partly due to your hair dryer, and some to the brushes you are using.

The Chi Lite Carbon Fiber Dryer was available at Ulta at one point, but looks like it’s on sale still on the Chi Website! At $99 (on sale) I’d say this is on par with what I’m willing to spend on dependable hair tools that will last me quite some time.

CHI Lite Carbon Fiber Dryer

  • 1600W DC ceramic motor: Provides quiet yet powerful airflow
  • Carbon fiber infused casing: creates a lightweight and durable dryer shell
  • 180° rotating nozzle: allows easy adjustment of nozzle position to direct airflow
  • Maximum ion generator technology: for superior smoothness and shine

Summer means rooftop get-togethers, fabulous weather, picnics in the park, and all the outdoor activities you can think of. Everyone’s out and about, los días are brighter and longer, la gente seem happier, work hours miraculously become shorter, and the overall excitement is palpable.

However, hopping from soirée to soirée can leave us exposed to the elements, making our skin and hair prone to some beauty challenges. Once we start sweating, our makeup also suffers, giving us the dreaded pasty look that we try to avoid at all costs.

But these beauty inconveniences don’t need to get in your way. We’re giving you the lowdown on the hottest Summer trends and the Ulta Beauty products you can use to achieve them while still looking fresh in this Verano caliente. Keep scrolling for all the details!

Protect your naturally textured hair from frizz with the right products. Beat the heat, stay cool, and Summer-proof your look with serums and leave-ins that will make it easier to take on the hottest Summer trend for hair: braids. CHI Aloe Vera Review by Crazy Beautiful Makeup

CHI Aloe Vera Review by Crazy Beautiful Makeup

I was so excited to receive this line from CHI to review, not only am I a huge fan of the brand but also because my hair has a natural wave. My hair is color treated, so that just adds to the texture and frizz. My curls aren’t as defined as they use to be but thanks to these products I can wear my hair natural without worry.

It has been a very long time since I could just let me hair air dry and wear it that way. Normally it would be frizzy, unruly and just not attractive but after just a uses I could notice a difference.

They are currently on sale at Ulta for buy 2 get 1 free! Which is an amazing deal and a great way to try the brand.

My 3 must haves from the line are the Shampoo, Conditioner and the Leave in Conditioner. The leave in conditioner has a climate control formula that controls frizz and humidity. I know anyone with curls or waves will adore this collection.

CHI Aloe Vera with Agave Nectar For Curly Hair

CHI Aloe Vera with Agave Nectar For Curly Hair

If you have curly hair, like me, then you know how much care it requires. Curly hair often tends to be dry, but even when it isn’t many mainstream haircare products can strip the hair and leave it frizzy and unruly. Curly hair needs more moisture, and therefore it is imperative to be careful in the products used to cleanse, condition and style curly tresses. I, for one, always use nourishing shampoos and conditioners, and I always use a leave-in conditioner to help tame my hair and to fight frizz. CHI Aloe Vera with Agave Nectar is a haircare collection that is specifically made to pamper and nourish curly hair, and it definitely works for me.

The CHI Aloe Vera Enhancing Shampoo is a non-stripping hydrating shampoo that effectively enhances my curls. It leaves behind no residue, and it rinses clean. My hair is always left soft and manageable when I use this shampoo, and I love its light clean aroma.

CHI Aloe Vera Detangling Conditioner is ultra-hydrating, it fights frizz and it effectively enhances curls. It leaves my hair soft, smooth and hydrated. It leaves behind no greasy residue, it rinses thoroughly and it has a pleasant clean aroma.

The CHI Aloe Vera Curl Reactivating Spray protects hair against humidity– which can cause curly hair to get frizzy– and it reactivates curls when they get a little limp. Hair is never weighed down by this spray, and it never gets crunchy or flaky.

CHI Aloe Vera Humidity Resistance Leave-in Conditioner makes hair very manageable, it fights frizz and it seals in moisture. It effectively detangles curly locks, and makes it effortless to comb damp hair. It has a light fresh aroma, but it does not linger in the hair for very long.

The Chi Aloe Vera Leave in conditioner provides increased elasticity for protection against breakage and seals in long-lasting moisture, smoothness and shine. Primes hair for effortless styling and eliminates unruly curls. For all curl types

The CHI Aloe Vera Hair Oil seals in moisture, hydrates hair and offers superior frizz control. It smooths hair, enhances natural curls and leaves hair soft, shiny and bouncy. It can be applied to dry or damp hair, and can be used on hair between shampoos without making it greasy.

Key Benefits: Features Aloe Vera and Agave Nectar to reduce the loss of moisture to depleted hair strands. Infused with a Super Hydration Blend for additional moisture and silk for added softness. The CHI Aloe Vera Oil seals in superior moisture and smoothness to control frizz. Provides high-gloss finish for beautiful, all-day styles. Increases elasticity and enhances natural curl pattern for shiny, bouncy and healthy-looking hair.

The CHI Aloe Vera Moisturizing Curl Cream hydrates the hair, fights humidity and frizz and helps to maintain perfectly formed curls. It has a light and clean aroma, but it isn’t overpowering or long-lasting.

If you like the control associated with a hair gel, then the CHI Aloe Vera Control Gel preserves curls, offers impressive hold (without freezing the hair in place) and guards against humidity. Hair is never left crunch or flaky, but instead it is soft, touchable and shiny.

Best Brushes for Blowouts – Features CHI Nylon Brush

Best Brushes for Blowouts – Features CHI Nylon Brush

If you’ve ever toyed with the notion of paying for professional blowouts, you know you’re going to save tons of time and money by investing in the best round brush that can give you tons of volume and shine, while speeding up drying time and minimizing heat damage.

Because these brushes deliver fabulous volume, straightening power, and soft curls and curves right where you want them, finding the right one could have you dumping all your other favorite hot tools right in the Goodwill bag. Here are a few things to consider when you’re choosing the best round brush for blowouts.

Barrel size – Generally, the longer your hair is, the bigger the barrel you’ll want. We’ve featured a couple of round brushes that go as large as three inch barrels. Most come in a variety of sizes, as you’ll see, so it’s easy to customize the right one for your hair length and thickness.

Bristle type – Many brushes come with a combination of nylon and boar bristles, although some have exclusively one or the other. Nylon bristles are best for grabbing and holding your hair on the brush, but they can feel scratchy on the scalp. We prefer nylon bristles with little nubs on the ends. Boar bristles are lovely because they efficiently distribute the natural oils in your hair, reducing dryness and providing extra shine.

Ceramic and ionic technology – These terms have everything to do with drying speed, avoiding heat damage, and reducing static electricity which leads to frizz. Most of the brushes on our list feature these technologies, including ionic mineral infused bristles which help to condition your hair.

Handle size and shape – Depending on whether or not you’re dealing with long hair, super grippy handles can actually catch and pull hair. Heavily textured handles are especially guilty on that front. Look for mostly smooth handles with soft foam finishes, or natural wood handles, for both form and function.

CHI Turbo Ceramic Round Nylon Brush

A lightweight brush with an aerated barrel that doesn’t tangle hair and greatly reduces the drying time.

  • CHI 44 ceramic barrel with nylon bristles
  • Ergonomic design with non-slip handle for better control
  • CHI ceramic maintains constant, even heat
  • Provides tangle free styling
  • For all hair types
  • Creates volume, polished waves, and sleek styles
  • Provides up to 40% faster drying time
Make Your Hair Less Greasy – Features CHI Magnified Volume Conditioner

Make Your Hair Less Greasy – Features CHI Magnified Volume Conditioner

Oily hair is like oily skin. Sometimes that’s just how it is. And other times it’s that way because of the habits we keep. Of course, hair-type also plays a role in how oily strands will appear. All my fine-hair ladies (and I’m sure some with coarser hair too) know the slick hair struggle all too well; we’re constantly trying to find ways to make your hair look less greasy.

It’s planning at exactly what time during the day hair needs to be washed so it will still look good during your evening date. It’s trying to avoid touching it and flinching away when others do. It’s extended time in front of the mirror wondering if an up-do is good enough or if today is just a hat-day. But greasy hair tends to be like most other insecurities: It always seems worse on yourself than how others see it.

If you’re feeling like your hair is just too oily regardless, there are certain things you can do to keep the oil production under control. While these methods will help make your locks less greasy in both the short and long term, it is important to fully evaluate and understand your current habits so you know how to properly fix them. Here are eight steps you can take toward having balanced hair:

CHI Magnified Volume Conditioner

Applying conditioner all over can totally weigh hair down, causing oily roots. Instead, just apply conditioner from mid-shaft to ends.

It also pays to find a conditioner designed for oily hair types, like this one from CHI. It was specifically developed for fine hair to add body and fullness, without leaving residue behind. Just make sure use a small drop so you don’t overburden your hair.

CHI Styles Natural Curly Hair Winners of 2019

CHI Styles Natural Curly Hair Winners of 2019

Natural curls reigned supreme for the 2019 Miss USA and Miss Teen pageants in Reno, Nevada this year. In fact, Miss Teen USA is the first to be crowned while wearing natural curls in TWO DECADES!

As the Official Haircare Sponsor, CHI’s brand-new Aloe Vera with Agave Nectar Haircare Line was used to achieve the beautifully defined styles on both winners. This 7-piece curl collection provides solutions to enhance definition, moisturize each spiral, and maintain frizz for smoother styling.

Hairstylist Joy Williams, Executive Master Educator for CHI, styled both Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst and Miss Teen USA 2019 Kaliegh Garris. Joy shares her styling tips for their winning looks– all created with CHI’s new launches at ULTA Beauty.

“Most curly girls do not shampoo their hair every day because curls crave moisture,” explains Hairstylist Joy Williams, Executive Master Educator for CHI. “To define Cheslie’s second- and third-day curls, I used the CHI Aloe Vera Curl Reactivating Spray. This spray not only reactivates the CHI Aloe Vera products I previously applied, but retightens any loose curls and eliminates frizz.”

1. Begin by shampooing hair with the CHI Aloe Vera Curl Enhancing Shampoo (rinse and repeat)

2. Towel dry hair to remove excess moisture and follow up with CHI’s Aloe Vera Detangling Conditioner

3. Once conditioner is saturated, use either a wide tooth comb or your fingers and gently comb through the hair starting at the ends and working your way up to the roots.

4. Rinse. Lightly towel dry the ends of the hair. Be careful not to rub too vigorously as the curls have begun to define as a result of the low pH of the CHI Aloe Vera products.

5. Now, use the LOC method to lock in moisture and hydration while defining those beautiful curls. The LOC Method stands for: L- leave- in/liquid, O- oil. C- cream

6. I like to start the LOC Method after the conditioner with the CHI Aloe Vera Humidity Resistant Leave-In Conditioner (The “L” in LOC). Curly hair needs this added conditioning. The Agave Nectar infuses moisture and improves elasticity of her curls while the Aloe Vera gives incredible shine and softness. Using either a wide tooth comb or your fingers, apply from root to ends. By now, her curls are beautifully defined and bouncy as the natural ingredients and low pH of the CHI Aloe Vera Line have tightened the cuticle and saturated the hair with moisture. From this point, we are simply locking in that moisture for long lasting results.

7. Next, I used the CHI Aloe Vera Oil (The “O” in LOC). I slowly rubbed the oil along the hair being careful not to disturb the curl pattern I just defined. A little goes a long way but I use as much as I feel she needs to lock in moisture and shine.

8. Finally, I sealed that definition by using the CHI Aloe Vera Moisturizing Curl Cream (The “C” in LOC). I pumped about a quarter size amount as needed. I rubbed the cream between my hands and then applied it to her hair by scrunching each of her curls in sections. One of my favorite tips for added definition is to finger coil individual curls. I make a cocktail of the Moisturizing Curl Cream and the CHI Aloe Vera Oil and twist the hair around my index finger from midshaft to ends. This technique removes any frizz and makes the ends of the curls pop!

9. My ultimate pro tip: I set the curl definition for days of beautifully defined curls by using my CHI Lava Blow Dryer with the locking diffuser attachment. I achieved this look by cupping her curls in the attachment and using medium to high heat. The volcanic lava technology in the CHI Lava Dryer allowed me to quickly set the curl while its honeycomb lava disk distributes negative ions locking in moisture, preventing frizz and adding shine. You will notice that our unique design and patented technology does not burn the scalp or cause discomfort even on high.

“To define Kaliegh’s second- and third-day curls, I also used the CHI Aloe Vera Curl Reactivating Spray,” explains Hairstylist Joy Williams, Executive Master Educator for CHI This spray not only reactivates the CHI Aloe products I previously applied, but retightens any loose curls and eliminates frizz. Then, we scrunched her hair in sections with the CHI Aloe Moisturizing Curl Cream finishing up with the CHI Aloe Vera Oil for ultimate shine!”

1. Begin by shampooing hair with the CHI Aloe Vera Curl Enhancing Shampoo (rinse and repeat)

2. Towel dry hair to remove excess moisture and follow up with CHI Aloe Vera Detangling Conditioner.

3. Once conditioner is saturated, use either a wide tooth comb or your fingers and gently comb through the hair starting at the ends and working your way up to the roots.

4. Rinse. Lightly towel dry the ends of the hair. Be careful not to rub too vigorously as the curls have begun to define as a result of the low pH of the CHI Aloe.

5. Now, I cocktailed a few of the CHI Aloe Vera with Agave Nectar products keeping in mind the LOC method to lock in moisture and hydration while defining those beautiful curls. Layering the product in this way ensures perfectly defined curls with long-lasting moisture and softness.

6. Kaliegh naturally has beautiful ringlet curls so we don’t want to disturb her curl pattern. Therefore, for the rest of her styling I used my fingers. First, I used the CHI Aloe Vera Humidity Resistant Leave-In Conditioner, distributing it from roots to ends. The Agave Nectar infuses moisture and improves elasticity of her curls while the Aloe Vera gives incredible shine and softness.

7. Next, my favorite thing to do is to cocktail the CHI Aloe Vera Oil and the CHI Aloe Vera Moisturizing Curl Cream. I used a couple of pumps of each product, about a quarter sized amount total. I rubbed this into my palms and applied the products by scrunching the hair in sections. Scrunching keeps her curl pattern intact and prevents frizz.

8. Finally, I gave added definition to her hair by finger coiling individual curls. I applied a little more of the CHI Aloe Vera Oil and twisted the hair around my index finger from midshaft to ends. This technique removes any frizz and makes the ends of the curls pop!

Shampoos For Oily Hair – Features CHI Tea Tree Oil

Shampoos For Oily Hair – Features CHI Tea Tree Oil

Healthy hair produces a certain amount of sebum, or oil, as a way to hydrate your scalp and protect your hair. The amount of oil you produce varies depending on your hair type, your hygiene habits, and other lifestyle factors.

Sometimes this natural oil can collect on your hair, especially at the root. This gives your hair a slick appearance that some people feel looks dirty.

If you feel your hair may be oilier than it should be, keep reading. This article will cover the causes of oily hair, products that can control oil production, and some home remedies for when your hair looks too oily for your liking.

Causes

The oil in your hair is part of your body’s defense system for the sensitive hair of your scalp.

This oil mixes with sweat and dirt, coating your scalp and sometimes the top of your head. This is normal and, for the most part, unavoidable.

Practicing good hair hygiene by washing your scalp often and well with a shampoo cleanses the oil and gives your hair a fresh start.

But some hair types are prone to oil buildup. Oil can build up to a visible level in less than a 24-hour time span. Sometimes intense exercise, overuse of hair products, or even going outside in excessive humidity or heat can trigger an oily hair day.

Overwashing

One somewhat unexpected cause of oily hair is overwashing. That’s right, it’s possible to wash your hair too often.

Every time you wash your hair with shampoo, it sends the scalp the signal to produce more sebum. If you’re washing your hair too often, your scalp gets the message that it needs to be in oil production overdrive.

This can result in oily buildup on your scalp.

Hair type

Straight hair is especially prone to collecting oil.

That’s because the hair shaft doesn’t have any texture or wave to it, so oil slides straight down the hair shaft and collects all over your head. It also makes oil in your hair more visible when hair hangs straight down.

Products

Another cause of oily hair is the type of products you use.

Sebum is a type of oil, which means that simply washing it with water doesn’t break it up. Rinsing your hair with just water or skipping the shampoo step and using only conditioner can allow oil to build up.

While it might not be easy to spot the oil when your hair is drying, it quickly appears oily again only a few hours or so later.

That’s because only certain ingredients, found in most shampoos, can break down the oil that builds up on your hair.

Shampoos for Oily Hair

There are special shampoos that do an especially good job of cleansing your hair of oil.

When excess sebum has been dissolved, you’ll notice that your hair stays fresh, clean, and oil-free for a longer span. Some expert-recommended shampoos for oily hair include:

  • Neutrogena T/Sal Therapeutic Shampoo. This shampoo is well-loved by experts because it contains salicylic acid as an active ingredient. Salicylic acid breaks down the oil on your head and scalp better than regular shampoos.
  • Aveda Scalp Benefits Balancing Shampoo. Aveda’s shampoo aims to cleanse your scalp with ingredients like echinacea and sage. These ingredients aim to refresh your scalp, clear away dead skin cells, and leave the pores and sweat glands underneath your hair free from obstruction.
  • Chi Tea Tree Oil ShampooThe Chi brand is known for products that protect and strengthen your hair cuticle, even when your hair has been damaged by heat. This oil-treatment shampoo is no different. Tea tree oil breaks down and washes away oil and debris on your scalp.
  • Redken Scalp Relief Oil Detox Shampoo. Redken’s take on a shampoo for oily hair aims to do a deep clean of your scalp. Eucalyptus oil and citrus peel are part of what makes this shampoo work to solve dandruff issues and treat an oily scalp.

Home Remedies

You can also work on treating oily hair using simple home remedies. There are several ingredients that can work to cut through hair that feels greasy or looks oily.

Essential oils

Keeping some hair-healthy oils on hand can work wonders to minimize oil buildup on your scalp.

Though it might feel counterintuitive to apply oils in an attempt to make hair less oily, certain essential oils work to break down sebum and clarify the pores on your scalp.

Peppermint oil and tea tree oil have both been found to deep clean your hair.

Run a drop or two through your hair between washes, being careful not to apply undiluted essential oils directly to your skin. You can also combine essential oils with other ingredients for a soothing hair mask.

You can find peppermint oil and tea tree oil online.

Apple cider vinegar

Using apple cider vinegar (ACV) as an occasional rinse for oily hair has been anecdotally successful.

People who swear by it believe that the ACV breaks down the oil while changing the pH of your hair and scalp, making it less prone to oil buildup in the first place.

If you’d like to try this remedy:

  1. Combine up to 10 teaspoons of ACV with about a gallon of warm water.
  2. Soak your hair in the mixture for a few minutes after washing with shampoo and conditioner.
  3. Rinse all of the ACV out of your hair when you’re finished.

Aloe vera

Using aloe vera strips off excess sebum and may also promote circulation around your scalp.

You can use a few drops of pure aloe vera as a leave-in conditioning treatment, or cleanse your hair with aloe as part of your routine.

Quick Fixes

You might be caught between washes with hair that feels oily. Especially after a workout or on a hot day, it’s good to have a few quick fixes on hand to minimize the look of oil in your hair.

Dry shampoo

Dry shampoo can mattify and dry your roots by absorbing oil. Keep in mind that using dry shampoo too often between washes can lead to irritation of your scalp.

Cornstarch or baby powder

Cornstarch and baby powder are the same concept as dry shampoo, just with one natural ingredient.

It can be a little tricky to apply just the right amount of cornstarch or baby powder to your hair. Both of these ingredients can dry out your scalp quickly, so just use a tiny bit at the crown of your head as a way to make oily roots less obvious.

Oil-absorbing sheets

Oil-absorbing sheets are typically used to absorb excess oil from the skin on your face. If you’re in a pinch, you can use them to absorb oil from your hair quickly. Focus on the root of your hair and your scalp to get rid of some of the oil.

Lifestyle Tips

Sometimes simply changing your grooming habits can reduce the amount of oil in your hair. Here are some lifestyle tips that may help oil levels in your hair.

Use baby shampoo

If you’re not ready to invest in a specialized shampoo meant to reduce oil, try using a gentle shampoo made for the sensitive scalps of babies and toddlers.

The ingredients in these products should dissolve oil on your head without triggering your scalp to produce extra sebum.

Wash your hair more (or less) often

This one will take a little trial and error to figure out, but if you find your mane is often weighed down by excess oil, chances are you need to switch up your beauty regimen.

Try going a day or two between washes if you’re used to washing every day, and see if that makes a difference.

If you only wash your hair two or three times a week, or wait until after a sweaty workout or humid day to wash your hair, try washing it more often.

Skip brushing between washes

Every time you brush your hair, you’re dragging sebum and sweat from your scalp down into your hair cuticle. When you distribute the oil throughout your hair, your scalp produces more. Brush less to keep the oil situation to a minimum.

Lay off the straightener

Similar to brushing your hair, straightening your hair moves oil throughout your hair cuticle. Hair straighteners and other hot tools for hair also apply heat close to the root of your hair, which can trigger your sweat glands.

Change out your pillowcases

Remember to wash your pillowcases often. Once a week is a good rule of thumb. Otherwise, every time you go to bed you’re lying in the oil and sweat buildup of your hair from day’s past.

You can wake up with a clean slate by making sure your pillowcases are as clean as they can be.

Refresh Dry Lifeless Curly Hair While Traveling – Features CHI Original Hair Iron

Refresh Dry Lifeless Curly Hair While Traveling – Features CHI Original Hair Iron

Airport hair, that unglamorous flat, frizzed out, flyaway mess that started as curls, is the result of several factors which include dry in-flight cabin pressure, the reactions of humectants in your products to the environment, and airline seat fabric. Travel stress and dehydration can add to this mix, but you don’t need us to tell you to breathe deeply and drink more water. For the other issues, read on.

Dealing with dry air:

Have you noticed how dry your skin feels, or how thirsty you become when flying? The dryness also affects our delicate curls, which can feel fried in flight. Follow these tips to keep your hair hydrated.

  • A day or two before your trip, do a deep conditioning treatment. On thoroughly saturated hair, apply the conditioner an inch or so below your roots, and work it down the hair shaft and into the ends. Cover with a plastic cap and let it sit on your hair for 20-30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
  • The day of travel, ensure that you use a leave-in, mousse, or cream-based styler in your hair for moisture. Tote along some sample bottles to provide your curls with hydration between flights. If you need a little extra water to apply them, just wet your hands and run your fingers through the parts of your hair that you will be applying product to.
  • Avoid using products that have glycerin listed in the top five ingredients on their labels. Glycerin is a humectant, and when you are in a low-humidity situation such as an airplane cabin, it will draw needed moisture out of your hair and distribute it into the environment.
  • Abstain from alcohol and drink plenty of water, because hangover hair is not cute.

Plopping on a plane:

If you like to plop your hair after washing it, this method will give you (airport) runway curls when you land. In addition to the products you use for your regimen, you will need a seamless microfiber headband.

  • Two hours or so before you leave for the airport, wash and condition your hair, and then apply your leave-in and stylers in the shower while your hair is soaking wet.
  • Part your hair as you normally would wear it, and then start scrunching all over your head.
  • Carefully put on the headband. I like to fold it in half to make it narrower. You can adjust it however you like, but I recommend ensuring that the back covers the nape of your neck. You may also want to make it flat at the back, as you will be resting your head on your headrest or a travel pillow, and bunched up fabric can be uncomfortable. I like to pull out my bangs and a few curls around my face.
  • Scrunch your hair with the headband as you would with a microfiber towel. Make sure you get your whole head.
  • You can keep your hair in this set as long as you wish. If you leave the scarf on throughout your transit, when you arrive at your destination, all you will need to do is shake out and fluff your hair, and perhaps add a bit of moisture to any errant curls.

Preventing the frizzies:

Nothing will tear up your curls like an airline seat. Wool blend upholstery and leather may be durable, but they are not hair-friendly. To avoid their effects, try these tricks:

  • Don a silk headwrap on the plane. It will protect your hair and keep your style looking fresh.
  • Get a satin cover for your travel pillow. They are inexpensive and come in a variety of colors.
  • Try a style-saver pillow. These ingenious contraptions have a neck cutout to prevent seat back to style friction.

Keeping your style intact:

Do you leave the house with hair worthy of the Met Gala only to arrive at your final destination looking like you were chased by a bear? If so, in addition to the above recommendations, try these style tips and tools.

  • If you can, opt for braids or a braided style like a French braid or braided updo. These styles secure the hair really well, and hold up against dry air.
  • Don’t forget about your edges. They will be the first to go flyaway in flight. Use a good edge tamer applied with a toothbrush to get them to stay put.
  • Avoid jaw clips, butterfly clips, and any other hair accessories that can be uncomfortable during flight. The more you adjust your ‘do, the more likely it is to become a don’t.

How My Summer Haircut Just Changed My Whole Year – Features CHI Original Iron

How My Summer Haircut Just Changed My Whole Year – Features CHI Original Iron

My hair is my crowning glory, so when it comes to caring for it, I’m very selective with who touches it. No matter how much older I get, the anxiety that comes with getting a trim (let alone an actual change-my-entire-style haircut) only gets worse. But since I turned 30, I’m feeling braver — and a haircut for summer 2019 is my way of facing my number one beauty fear.

My last drastic haircut took place when I was about 8 years old. My parents thought that a bob would look so cute with my curly and thick hair. In reality, it ended up being a very traumatic experience as I threw a temper tantrum, watching my long, wavy tresses fall to The Hair Cuttery floor. That was the last time I asked for “just a few inches off.”

Aside from the occasional snip, I haven’t touched my hair since. If anything, I prefer my hair longer for the sake of ease: I opt to throw my hair into a bun or a low-maintenance ponytail quite frequently, even though the uninspired looks make my hair appear duller than it actually is. So eventually, I began scrolling through Instagram and created a folder to remember the styles I liked. I noticed a theme of one-length lobs that dominated my ideas. I figured that this style would still be easy to manage and definitely easy to wear out of my beloved ponytail, and with some added color, my hair would have the vibrancy I craved.

I quickly pushed my Hair Cuttery memories aside for an appointment at the IGK Salon in SoHo, New York City, where I was introduced to hairstylist Jessie Meltz. I explained how I wanted my hair to be cut — down to the inch — along with photos of a few bloggers who nailed the look I had in mind. Meltz assured me that she’d find a silhouette within my comfort zone, and my fears washed away as I leaned back into the plush leather chair. I also chatted with Stephanie Brown, a master colorist, and gave her an in-depth description of the hue I wanted: Lighter pieces to frame my face, with my naturally dark hair looking rich and shiny.

Surprisingly, I felt a sense of calm as Meltz snipped my dead ends, then worked her way up. With each cut, I felt lighter in every sense of the word. My stylist made sure that I was still comfortable with it and to my surprise, I found myself requesting more off.

Once my hair was dried, dyed, and styled, I was so happy that I committed to my decision — my hair looks the best it has in a long time. I left the salon more confident wearing my hair down, and ready to try all of the styles that only lived in my Saved folder.

Before I switched to this iron, straightening my hair took over an hour. Now I cut that time down to 30 minutes. The heat settings are great for my extremely thick and curly hair.

CHI 44 Iron Guard Recommended for Heat Protectants to Try

CHI 44 Iron Guard Recommended for Heat Protectants to Try

Have you ever wondered why your hair doesn’t seem to flourish the way you think it should? The ends are always dry or it’s thinning, despite your best efforts at hair care. Although it sometimes seems we’re doing everything we can to take good care of our hair, that’s not always the case. It’s easy to do harm to our hair without realizing it—which may be why you’re not seeing as much growth or shine. These ten things you might be doing with your hair can negatively impair its health, so if you find yourself doing any of them, stop and see if the health of your mane doesn’t improve.

1. Too Much Heat

The tools that make our lives so much easier can also quickly damage your hair when misused. That daily “bump” with your trusty curling iron can slowly but surely fry your ends. Even one time that’s too hot can permanently kill your hair, so take it easy. Try gentler methods for providing curl and volume to your tresses, such as wrapping at night or satin-covered rollers. The occasional pass with a thermal styling tool should be safe, but always use a heat protectant as a barrier between a hot iron and your hair.

2. Bleaching

Bleaching should be reserved for white clothing. When it comes to black hair, you need to ask yourself if you want healthy locks or to be a platinum blonde—because you usually can’t have both. Natural hair can sometimes withstand this extreme lightening, but not without heavy and frequent conditioning. If you wear yours relaxed, choose another color; preferably one that doesn’t lift your natural shade more than three levels.

3. Stripping Relaxers

If you use mayonnaise to try and strip a relaxer from your hair, you’re not doing permanent damage, but you’re not doing anything else either. But if you use dish detergent, harsh shampoos or products that promise to strip chemicals, you’re definitely harming your hair. Relaxers are permanent—they change the chemical structure of your hair. Think about it like cooking an egg. Just like you can’t uncook an egg, nothing will strip a relaxer. So save your vinegar, coconut milk and detergent. Either practice patience or cut it all off.

4. Using the Wrong Products

Walk into most drugstores or discount stores and chances are you’ll see the “ethnic hair” aisle or corner. It’s where retailers choose to stock products marketed toward African American consumers. It’s an issue that’s slowly changing, but definitely not fast enough. Many of these products aren’t even good for black hair. They tend to contain suffocating ingredients like petroleum, or are so heavy that there’s no way your hair will “bounce and behave.” Instead of reaching for the first jar that promises instant growth (there is no such thing), look at the ingredients label. If petroleum or petrolatum is one of the first listed, put it back. Leave the ethnic aisle altogether and expand your shopping horizons. Brands like Paul Mitchell, Jane Carter Solutions and Shea Moisture work with all hair textures. Your health food store is also a great place to shop. There’s no need to use cheap, poorly made products that don’t benefit your mane.

5. Shampooing Too Often

Daily shampooing isn’t ideal for any hair texture, but it’s even worse on black hair. Even if you shampoo the recommended once or twice a week, make sure you’re using gentle cleansers. Avoid any that contain sodium lauryl sulfate; it’s the ingredient that gives shampoo lots of lather, which is perfect for stripping natural oils out. It’s the opposite of what you want for well-moisturized tresses, and will cause serious breakage.

6. Not Shampooing Often Enough

Unless you walk around wearing a hat all day long, your hair is subject to dust, dirty air, grime, and pollution. While you shouldn’t wash black hair every day, it needs to see some water more often than not. Not shampooing and letting dirt build up will not grow your hair. At least once a week is a good schedule to follow for shampooing but consider your lifestyle, too. If you exercise frequently, you may need to incorporate co-washes into your regimen; cleansing it three times per week isn’t going to be as drying as if your hair is relaxed and colored, if your hair is very short and natural. Whatever shampoo routine you follow, make it regular.

7. Pulling Hair Tight

A hairstyle shouldn’t hurt, and if yours does, or causes tiny bumps to develop at your hairline, (although hopefully it doesn’t,) it’s too tight. Too many people have painful hairdos that aren’t necessary. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear a sleek ponytail if you know it looks good on you, but it does mean you need to loosen it before bed, and not wear this same style day after day. Braids are a wonderful low-maintenance, protective ‘do when done correctly. When they’re done incorrectly, they can be a fast track to sparse hairlines and permanent hair loss.

8. Overprocessing

By now, you probably know not to apply relaxer to previously processed hair, but with so many people applying chemicals at home, it’s still easy to make this mistake. Add permanent color to straightened hair and you often have a recipe for maximum breakage. To avoid this issue, it’s best to see a stylist for relaxer and color applications. It’s also a good idea to have an honest stylist on hand, one who will tell you that ash blonde isn’t going to do anything for your relaxed hair except dry it out. Sometimes, we can’t get everything we want from—that’s what weaves are for.

9. Rough Handling

All hair gets tangled at some point, but it’s how you handle it that determines whether you retain your hair or whether you pull it out. Instead of yanking at tangles, work through them with your fingers first, and then with a wide-tooth comb. Detangle while your hair is saturated with conditioner if necessary. If you’re in a hurry, save your untangling for when you’re not—it’s when we’re in a rush that we most often pull roughly, instead of working through gently.

10. Holding on to Split Ends

Ladies who are trying to grow longer locks often have a hard time with this one, but cutting away split ends is essential for healthy hair. Would you rather have a lengthy mane with thin, see-through sections where it’s broken off? Or would you rather start off shorter, but with strong, thick locks? Unfortunately, some people choose the first option and walk around with blatantly unhealthy hair. Split ends don’t fix themselves—you have to trim them away as needed to prevent the the split from traveling further up the hair shaft and splitting the hair even more.

The Very Cavallari star took to Instagram recently to show Us that we’ve been using our hair straighteners completely wrong! Or maybe we’ve just been missing out on a new way of using it! Want to replicate the 32-year-old’s signature beachy waves? This is the flat iron she loves along with nearly 4,000 reviewers!

Hair straighteners were designed to do just that: straighten our hair. But as Cavallari showed us, we just may have been using it wrong this entire time. Turns out this flat iron is basically a two-in-one tool if you know how to use it!

The CHI Original 1″ Flat Hair Straightening Ceramic Hairstyling Iron is the all-in-one hair device our lives absolutely need. No need to pack a curling iron along with a straightener with this tool in our luggage!

This flat iron is great when looking to reduce frizz and static electricity. The ceramic plates use infrared heat to leave as little damage as possible, despite its flash quick heating, which can reach up to 392°F. Instead, negative ions will lock in moisture and shine, leaving each and every strand silky smooth and soft.

Nearly 4,000 reviewers are obsessed with this flat iron, calling it the best one they’ve ever used hands down.

Additionally, this all-in-one ergonomic design will not only straighten our hair has the ability to flip and wave it too with a twist of the wrist, which makes Cavallari’s step-by-step method a lot more understandable now!

In a recent Instagram story, Cavallari used this tool to lightly curl her hair instead of flat ironing it for the perfect amount of beach waves. The results are so good which means everyone will want to achieve a similar look to hers, too!

“I’m not a tutorial girl in the slightest,” she said in the video, “but people ask me a lot how I curl my hair so I’m going to show you.”

Her method was pretty simple. She started off by dividing the hair into two sections and secured the top half with a clip. Next, she eliminated frizz and locked in her hair’s natural moisture by blow drying it from root-to-tip. Cavallari then twisted and bent her wrist in an upward motion, wrapping her hair around the tool until she reached the top of her head, pulled her hair out then twirled it around her index finger.

“After I curl all of it, I straighten the ends,” she added. The final result is her signature beachy, lived-in look that will add volume and style to any hair type.

It’s all thanks to this tool which will give everyone the It girl-approved hair trend that also happens to be Cavallari-approved, too.

Farouk Systems Welcomes International Distributors with Texas Hospitality

Farouk Systems recently hosted a three-day summit for their international distribution partners. The event kicked off at CHI Headquarters in Houston, where distributors from around the world congregated for founder and co-chairman, Dr. Farouk Shami’s opening remarks. He highlighted several notable product development updates, including the upcoming CHI Color Master – the latest breakthrough from Farouk Systems’ partnership with LG Household & Healthcare.

President of Innovation, Lisa Marie Garcia, and LG H&H Research Lab Senior Researcher, Jungyong Lee, demonstrated how this hair color technology advancement can formulate over 150,000 pre-programmed color formulas as well as customizable options.

Garcia also shared details about CHI Haircare’s upcoming launches, including the CHI LAVA tool line’s latest additions, a line extension for the CHI Ionic Color Illuminate Conditioners and the all-new CHI Ionic Color Illuminate Shampoos –color shampoos that are formulated with at least 90% natural ingredients.

New entries were also announced to the BioSilk with Organic Coconut Oil line: the Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner, Whipped Volume Mousse and the Curl Cream.

The international distributors received an extra dose of southern hospitality when they were welcomed to Dr. Shami’s Woodlands, TX home. They dined there for two evenings before traveling to the Rami Ranch just outside of Centerville, Texas. The ranch is where many herbs and nettle are planted and used to source ingredients for selected CHI Haircare products. Over the weekend there the distributors indulged in hay rides, authentic Texas BBQ and leisurely fishing.

“Meeting with our international distributors isn’t solely about business,” said Dr. Shami. “It’s about embracing unique global perspectives and coming together as a family. When you look at the person next to you as family, that bond unites us further in exploring collaboration that will forge our path for continuous innovation, longevity and overall prosperity.”
