At the outset of 2020, nobody would have bet on a hand sanitizer shortage. But with the global pandemic of COVID-19, people cleared shelves of sanitizer virtually everywhere. As the shortage impacted average citizens and health care professionals alike, many companies stepped up to make hand sanitizer. CHI and BioSilk are now among those companies doing their part to help out during this crisis.
Both companies are known for their hair care products, which means hand sanitizer isn’t their norm, but something they were able to work up quickly. After creating the CHI Natural Gardens Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer and BioSilk Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer with Soothing Aloe Vera, CHI donated $1 million worth of the sanitizer to the city of Houston.
“Currently, we are in the process of making millions and millions of bottles of high-quality hand sanitizers to bring to the market […] to help people in need right now,” said John Long, Farouk Systems, Inc. Director of Operations.
The FDA-approved product has higher levels of alcohol, with 77% Ethyl alcohol (antimicrobial), which will kill 99.99% of germs. The CDC recommends using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol to protect yourself from novel coronavirus, so this product fits the bill. Both hand sanitizers also contain natural aloe vera grown at CHI’s Natural Gardens. Aloe vera has soothing properties and essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, and the formula is designed to soothe and seal in moisture instead of drying your hands out like most sanitizers.
Best of all, these products are actually in stock online. After weeks of shortages at Amazon, Walmart, Target, and other retailers, you can buy some hand sanitizer online again.
You can get the CHI hand sanitizer directly on CHI’s website for between $5.74 and $34.23, depending on the size. The sanitizer is also available at Sally Beauty for $11.99 for an 11.5 oz. bottle. Don’t try to buy them out, as there’s a limit to four per order. The BioSilk hand sanitizer is available for $2.99 to $49.50, starting out at 2.2 oz. and it goes all the way up to a gallon.
In addition to donating $1 million worth of hand sanitizer, CHI — as in the hair-tool company — is manufacturing hand sanitizers for sale, formulated with aloe grown in the company’s natural gardens. In has soothing aloe, plus glycerin and amino acids to help lock in moisture. This sanitizer is currently stocked in four sizes, ranging from a portable two ounces to a more substantial 26
