Hairstylists, barbers and salon owners gathered at the Farouk Systems, Inc. headquarters in Houston, on April 30th, to call on Texas Governor Greg Abbott to reopen the salon industry amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Please give us the opportunity to earn our living and practice our profession,” said Dr. Farouk Shami, Founder and Chairman of Farouk Systems, Inc at the Hairstylist Appreciation Rally.
Attendees flocked to the haircare company grounds on Hairstylist Appreciation Day while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining a social distance to hear Shami speak. The haircare mogul explained that the salon industry is prepared and well trained to keep both staff and clients safe and healthy.
“We are licensed for safety,” said Shami. “The first class that we [take] is on safety. […] Sanitation is our specialty before we start any service, and we are capable of instructing others on how to be safe.”
Under phase one of the government’s federal guidelines, only restaurants, retailers and movie theaters were given the greenlight to reopen business on Friday, May 1st.
The haircare entrepreneur urged the governor to consider salons and barbershops as essential businesses for phase one reopening, and he is hopeful his message will be heard.
“We are needed […] to help people feel good about themselves,” said Shami. “We are an important part of the economy of the state of Texas, and we are ready to serve our community.”
